Domain Name Change

Why did you change from .COM to .ORG?

Since 2017, the American Legion Post 67 has been using the domain name of “LakeMillsLegion.com” for its website. While it is common for many corporations to use the Top Level Domain (TLD) of “.com” for conducting “commerce” for business use, the Legion post is not truly a “business”, but rather a non-profit “organization” with a mission statement focused on serving veterans and the surrounding community. Organizations of this type typically use the TLD of “.org” instead, and that is true of both the national Legion website (legion.org) as well as the regional Wisconsin Legion website (wilegion.org). As such, the Lake Mills website is following suit to also use the “.org” TLD to better align itself with the other Legion website domain names, and to better project the posts non-profit status and mission to the public at large.

What is happening to the .COM domain?

The Post is still retaining ownership of the old “.com” domain name, and the old domain is not for sale. Furthermore, any external links that were pointed to the old domain are being forwarded/redirected to the new “.org” domain. So, any bookmarks, weblinks, etc. that are on other websites should still function without any additional user interaction.

Are there other changes we should know about?

Yes! There are two additional changes being made at this time…

Email

In addition to the website domain change, some key positions will be using the “.org” domain for email purposes. This is to a) segregate personal emails from organization emails as it pertains to key post officer positions and the like, and conversely b) better project to the public that emails being sent to them are coming on behalf of the Legion and not from some random stranger. This change had a “soft launch” a while back for some of the official news announcements for the post using the [email protected] email account. This among other key accounts should start being used more frequently going forward.

Website Cosmetics

In addition to the name change, the overall aesthetics of the Post’s website will be changing ever so slightly. This is to once again better align the posts web presence with the regional and national branding. By following the color schemes in the official branding guidelines, the Posts website will offer a more cohesive representation of the Legion. That said, these color scheme changes should overall be fairly subtle.
